Trade-offs in fitness traits in Drosophila were studied in a laboratory environment. Fly and wasp lines originated from an ecological community in a tropical rainforest in Queensland, Australia and were established in České Budějovice. Experimental evolution was used to impose selective pressures on populations of flies to select for parasitoid resistance and competitive ability. The selection regimes were followed by two separate phenotyping experiments to measure the resulting phenotypic changes and impose novel conditions to the evolved flies in order to identify trade-offs.cze

dc.description.defence
Candidate’s presentation: 11:03-11:21

Supervisor Jan Hrček read his assesment

Reviewer 1 Pável Matos Maraví presented his review and raised following questions: 1) What is the most competitive driver between all the parameters? 2) Is the response adaptive? 3) Were the experiments with the other wasp species run in parallel? 4) What is the perspective of experiments with artificial evolution?

Reviewer 2 Petr Janšta was absent, his review was presented by M. Volf. The reviewer made several comments, appreciated the design and asked following questions: 1) Do you have previous experience/information for setting the sufficient number of generations to obtain resistance? 2) What is optimal design regarding the wasps number? 3) How many eggs can one parasitoid female produce? 4) What is the difference between “high” and “medium” preasure in terms of your theses? 5) What is the explanation for mentioned failed experiments?

Questions from the committee:

K. Sam: What further phenotypic measurements do you plan? M. Volf: Do you think is there a life history difference between fruitfly populations/species? O. Nedvěd: How to distinguish different mechanisms of parasitoid killing?

Questions from the audience: Why did you choose this species? Student responded all questions satisfactory.

Grading: excellent (6x excellent, 1x very good)

J.
