dc.description.abstract-translatedThe main objective of presented review is to describe filter-feeding adjustments in common Czech cyprinid fish (common bream Abramis brama, roach Rutilus rutilus and bleak Alburnus alburnus) in the context of inter-sex differences. Branchial sieve used for filtering small particles is formed by branchial arches and connected branchial rakers. Shape, structure, size and number of branchial rakers are crucial for efficiency of filter-feeding. These parameters differ between species as well as between populations within individual species. Target cyprinid species have been described to have size sexual dimorphism with females being bigger due to fecundity increasing with size. Differing energy investments to gonads may result in habitat segregation of sexes and potential adjustments of branchial sieves in sexes according to habitat-specific prey availability.eng
