| dc.description.abstract-translated | Gibbons (Hominoidea: Hylobatidae) are small arboreal apes inhabiting tropical and subtropical rain forests in Southeast Asia and Indonesia. With up to 20 species, they form the most diverse group of living hominoids. Gibbons show remarkable diversity of coat colors and unique patterns of sexual and ontogenetic dichromatism. This diversity has never been comprehensively documented and little is known about how this color variation is generated and maintained by the processes of evolution. The aim of this study is to summarize available knowledge about coloration and sexual and ontogenetic dichromatism of gibons and to utilize time-calibrated phylogeny and phylogenetic reconstruction of ancestral character states in order to reconstruct evolutionary history of coloration changes in gibbons. The results are discussed in light of various theories on function and adaptive significance of primate coloration. | eng |
