dc.description.defence
The candidate presented his thesis, which was evidently based on much work, both theoretical and bioinformatic. The committee particularly appreciated very insightful theoretical overview of his topic, which allowed even members not familiar with the thesis topic to follow the arguments closely and conveniently. The presentation had a serious fault, however, that it stretched over the agreed time limits, dealt with too many details and was repetitive in such aspects as computation methods used. Plus, some of the presented graphs suffered small lettering, tiny axes labels and other frequent beginners' mistakes. Some slides presented too much details, but failed to present the core of their message, e.g. statistical significance values.
Both the superviser's and reviewers' evaluations emphasized the size of the thesis (147 pp of scientific text), self-reliant working habits of the student, and a relative speed with which it was finished. Thus, the committee agreed that much of valuable work was done, the thesis demonstrates dedicated and keen work and rightfully deserves to pass, but the student, perhaps due to pandemic quarantines, missed to learn some of the crucial scholarly skills, such as brevity and topicality in scientific talks. He was advised to work on these skills in his future career.
cze
