The effect of Sirtuins on the activity of mTOR, a regulator of apoptosis induced proliferation, was studied in the eye of Drosophila melanogaster. The eye sizes of wildtype flies and mutants with knockdown of a Sirtuin, respiratory Complex I or both were compared by quantifying the amount of red eye pigment with colorimetry.cze

dc.description.defence
Prof Grubhoffer welcomed the student and commission members; all commission members were present. The student presented the theoretical background of his work on apoptosis, sirtuins, apoptosis, and the related pathways. Then he showed the experimental setup, results, and conclusions. The supervisor and the opponent presented their reviews. The student answered all the opponent's questions; next, he answered questions from the commission members on the enzymatic activity of sirtuins, their mutation, and the microscopic detection of apoptotic cells.

Votes: 5x 1

Final grade: excellent

Points: 145

The commission suggests this thesis for the Outstanding bachelor theses award by the head of the Department of Chemistry.
cze
