| dc.description.abstract-translated | The great apes exhibit considerable individual variability in the timing of reproduction and
other life history traits. With the increasing number of study sites, there is growing suspicion
that our knowledge of intraspecific variability in these traits may be underestimated and this
may affect our conclusions about the evolution of human life history. In this thesis, I compare
variability in selected life history traits among long-term study sites of free-ranging great apes
and human hunter-gatherers. I review intraspecific and interspecific variability and compare
the new data with older data used in comparative studies. I identify the main caveats in the
current knowledge, discuss life history differences between human and other great apes, and
describe implications for hypotheses about the evolution of human life history. | eng |
